THE VOLCANIC COMPONENTS OF THE CAPE GRANITE SUITE

Langebaan Granites and Volcanics

In 2002 Scheepers and Nortjè announced the existence of a volcanic component related to the Cape Granite Suite and published some of the general characteristics of specific phases of the ignimbrites, particularly in the Postberg area – bordering the Langebaan lagoon on the west coast of the Western Cape Province in South Africa. The chemistry of the Postberg ignimbrites is compared to the chemistry of the “Saldanha quartz porphyry” north of Saldanha Bay and shown to be distinctly different.
